Considering Cosmetic Surgery Abroad? Think Again!

It’s the latest buzzword in the medical industry, and no matter how enticing and exotic it sounds, medical tourism is just another euphemism for cheap medical procedures abroad. It’s no secret that the cost of healthcare is exorbitant in the USA, and if you don’t have the required insurance, any kind of surgery is going to eat into your bank account. This is why most people are tempted to go abroad, to countries where healthcare is much cheaper, to get their surgeries done. However, when it comes to cosmetic surgery, is it really worth your while to go overseas to get the procedure done?

More and more people are choosing to go to countries like India, Thailand, Malaysia, and even Egypt and the Czech Republic to get their nip-tucks done. But before you go down this road, think about the following issues:

  1. I don’t mean to imply that the quality of healthcare is any less in a foreign country, but just because it’s cheaper, you cannot ignore the consequences that could arise if there are complications with your procedure. You don’t know how qualified your surgeon is or even if the person you spoke to over the phone or corresponded with through email is the one who will handle your procedure. And even if any remedial measures (you’re your breast implants start to leak when you’re on your way back home) needed are not immediate, you cannot fly back to that country and force the surgeon to make amends. And if the complications endanger your life, you’re going to have to shell out much more for quality care in the US of A.
  2. The rules and laws governing cosmetic surgery in other countries are not as stringent as they are in the USA. So if things go wrong, you may not be in a position to sue them and claim compensation for your suffering and pain.
  3. The language and local customs may be totally alien to you, so if the recuperative and recovery period is long and painful, you could get lonely if you don’t have a companion to take care of you.
  4. Also, when you’re a foreigner in countries like India where both luxury and squalor compete for space, you could be fooled into paying much more for the surgery than the locals do. It’s a common trend that almost everyone, from big businesses to small roadside vendors, follow – they assume you have money to burn and so charge you an amount that is much more than they would charge a local for the same procedure or service. It’s an unfair and unethical practice, but you remain in the dark because as far as you’re concerned, you’re paying less than you would in the USA.

Before you decide to go abroad for cosmetic surgery, research your options thoroughly; talk to people who have gone to the same country for the same procedure and use their experience to gain an insight as to how things are done locally and to determine if you can trust your doctor and the healthcare facility that is offering you this deal. The key to a safe surgery is information – when you’re informed, you’re prepared for any eventuality.
